Avoriaz is a French mountain village in the heart of the Portes du Soleil. It is based in the commune of Morzine and can be reached easily either from Thonon on Lake Geneva or from the Cluses junction on the A40 freeway between Geneva and Chamonix. Avoriaz was built on a shelf high above the town of Morzine, one of the pioneer towns of skiing with its first lifts dating back to the early 1930s. The architecture of Avoriaz is unique among ski resorts built especially for the 1960s. Today, Avoriaz is one of the most important French ski resorts for all skiing standards and is one of the top snowboard destinations in the world. In addition to snow-covered activities, Avoriaz is also a center for trekking, golf, VTT (mountain biking) and other outdoor activities in the summer. The center is fully skiable. Other transportation at the resort includes horse-drawn sleighs and snow cats in winter.
Downhill mountain biking
Portes du Soleil is one of the top downhill mountain biking stations in Europe and by far the largest in France. Some of the test tracks starting from Avoriaz and the local branch of the French Ski School (ESF) are transformed into a downhill bike school and bike rental every July and August. A number of chairlifts are operated during the summer to ensure lift capacity for the rapidly growing number of downhill mountain bikers. Cycling in Avoriaz is concentrated in the Lindaret Valley with connections further to Châtel and Les Crosets. There are also a large number of tracks around Morzine and Les Gets.
This water park with over 1500 tropical plants and 183 tropical trees was opened in July 2012 and offers an aquatic leisure experience in a tropical environment.
